A steel bender has landed in an Accra Circuit Court after allegedly raping a 30-year-old mentally challenged woman, an inmate of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, on several occasions.
The accused person David Kwesi Babiye who was put before a court presided over by Sedina Agbemava denied the offence of having carnal knowledge of an imbecile.
He has been granted bail in the sum of GH¢4,000 with two sureties while the case has been adjourned to July 31, 2013.
Narrating events leading to the arrest of the accused person, the prosecuting officer, Chief Inspector Veronica Ofei, told the court that the accused person, Babiye, is the suspect while the father of the victim, Emmanuel Kofi Prah, is the complainant.
She said the accused person lives in the same vicinity at Teshie with the complainant and his daughter, who has been attending the psychiatric hospital for some time now.
According to her, on June 30, 2013, the victim left home but did not return, so her father went around looking for her but to no avail. He therefore sent a message to persons in the neighbourhood to help him find her.
The prosecutor stated that on July 7, 2013, a witness in this case informed the complainant that his daughter was in the room of the steel bender.
The police officer explained that the father of the victim, in the company of the witness, went to house of the suspect, barged into his room and saw the accused and his daughter.
During interrogation, the victim revealed that the steel bender had invited her to spend some time with him and said he had defiled her on several occasions.
The prosecutor noted that the case was consequently reported to the police at Nungua who in turn transferred the case to the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit.
Explaining further, she said the victim was issued with a medical form to go to the hospital for examination after which the accused person was arraigned when police concluded investigations.
