Ambassador Gene Cretz addressing attendees at the United States’ 237th Independence Day celebration at the US Embassy in Accra US in Accra
Gene Cretz, US Ambassador to Ghana, says Ghana’s decision to partner his country to investigate the cause of the recent fire outbreaks at market places and some other public places in the country shows how friends can join hands to share expertise.
He said the request of Ghana’s government to the U.S was laudable.
Some persons alleged to have started the recent fires are currently being prosecuted in a law court in Accra.
“Without listing every aspect of our partnership, let me state another way to think about our partnership. That is what friends and allies do to collaborate to share expertise,” Ambassador Cretz remarked.
Ambassador Cretz made the remark when he addressed the gathering during the United States’ 237th Independence Day celebration at the US Embassy in Accra on Thursday, June 27, 2013.
He noted that his tour of the country during the nine-month period gave him the chance to assess the various development projects being implemented with the assistance of his country to help transform the lives of Ghanaians.
He cited education, sanitation, health, water, defense and security and ICT as some of the key areas.
He said “it is important that we report results on our activities so that governments, citizens and broader civil society can know that our partnership is well-thought-out and that donor funds are used wisely.”
Seth Terkper, Finance Minister, who was the head of government delegation at the event, expressed appreciation to the International Finance Corporation (IFC) for the provision of $80 million loan for expansion works at the Takoradi 2 power plant, as well as Ghana’s selection for another Millennium Challenge Corporation Compact.
The Finance Minister, on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama reiterated government’s commitment to tackle drug trafficking and terrorism.
He added that Ghana would continue to count on her development partners such as the United States in the coming years.
Former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyemang Rawlings, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Hannah Tetteh, Foreign Affairs Minister and British High Commissioner to Ghana, Peter Jones among others, were in attendance.
