Speaking at the Osu Presbyterian Church to mark the 31st anniversary of the extra-judicial killing of three High Court Judges and a retired army officer by the Rawlings-led Provincial National Defence Council military junta on June 30, 1982, Prof. Martey said comments of the nature made by the Legislator risked plunging the country into mayhem.
According to him, Mr. Agyapong deserved to be hauled before the Supreme Court in like manner that some Political Commentators and Journalists have been invited before the Bench over alleged contemptuous comments they passed in relation to the ongoing election petition.
“Left to me alone, this exercise should be extended to cover all hate speeches in [the] recent past that have been uttered by persons who for instance, want all Ewes and all Gas to be killed and similar unpatriotic utterances”, he suggested.
He warned that: “If not addressed on time, such utterances can put the whole nation in flames”, recalling the 1994 Rwandan genocide which was sparked in similar manner.
The anniversary of the killing of Justices Fred Poku Sarkodee, Cecilia Koranteng-Addow and Kwadwo Agyei Agyepong is remembered as Martyrs Day every year by the Ghana Bar Association and the Judiciary.
It has been described by historians as one of the darkest and bloodiest moments in Ghana’s political history.
