Kindergarten Children Learn Under Trees In Ellembelle

Sunday, 14 July 2013

INFORMATION REACHING DAILY GUIDE indicates that school children in some communities in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region are still having lessons under trees.
DAILY GUIDE has gathered that some kindergarten children and those at the lower primary in some of the communities sit on the ground to write and receive teaching from their teachers.
Those in the higher levels carry tables and chairs daily and place them under the trees for classes.
Sources at the District asserted that flies, mosquitoes, bees and other insects pose as great threat to the lives of the children, and this is affecting the level of performance among the children.
Residents are also complaining about the negative impact this trend was having on the communities.
They indicated that “it is disgusting to note that in this 21st century, we cannot continue to have children going to school under trees.”
Confirming the story in a telephone interview with DAILY GUIDE, Seth Gyambo, chairman of the School Management Council (SMC) of Kwesikrom D.A Primary School stressed that it was not good for future leaders of this country to be allowed to learn in an environment where even teachers feel uncomfortable to teach.
He indicated that close to a decade, the Kwesikrom Primary School located in the northern part of Ellembelle district had been operating under trees and were exposed to all kinds of mishaps.
He alleged that even though several complaints had been made to the District Education Directorate and the Assembly for the necessary interventions to be made, these have only proven futile.
“Since the children are not having lessons in a building, distractions and lack of concentration are the major problems facing them,” he added.
He then appealed to the government to intervene since improving quality of education at the basic level was one of the panaceas to the falling standards of the educational system in the country.
