Gunman Kills Teacher In Kumasi

Saturday, 6 July 2013

A 47-YEAR-old teacher in Kumasi was shot dead in front of his home by an unknown gunman early yesterday when he stepped out of his room to pass urine, in the latest shooting incident in the Garden City.
Isaac Turkson, a Welding and Fabrication teacher at the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI), was shot in the genitals around 3:40am, as he stood in front of his house at Akotoso-Kontompo near the Kumasi Airport.
“He was also stabbed in the back and sustained injury on his left arm,” ASP Yusif Mohammed Tanko, Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, who confirmed the tragic incident, said.
ASP Tanko said Turkson’s wife told the police there was a short conversation between her husband and the killer which was followed by the gunshot.
Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital, had been experiencing gun-related violence recently, leading to the deaths of some residents, and putting the city on edge.
According to the police PRO, the woman said she saw a certain man wearing a mask standing close to where her husband was lying when she ran out of the house upon hearing the sound of the gunshot.
Tanko added that Turkson’s wife claimed the assailant signalled her to keep quiet, which she obliged, and then he fled.
The police spokesman disclosed that the teacher died while being transported to the hospital for medical attention.
His body had since been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital morgue for autopsy.
ASP Tanko said his outfit had begun investigations into the incident, adding that they believed the shooting was a targeted killing, as nothing was taken away by the assailant.
The latest shooting incident came some days after a man in his mid twenties was killed when a gang of four men opened fire on him on Saturday.
The incident occurred around 2:50am close to an intersection traffic light on the Tech road at Amakom near the Children’s Park in Kumasi.
The victim, about five-feet-seven inches tall, was shot when he was returning home from a funeral and died on the spot, DAILY GUIDEgathered.
