The Cocoa Marketing Board (CMB) Market in Accra was on Tuesday gutted by a fire.
It took a combined team of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the Military and the Police over three hours to bring the ravaging fire under control.
Mr Prince Billy Anaglatey, Divisional Officer and Deputy Public Relations Officer of the GNFS told the Ghana News Agency that his outfit received a distress call at 2010 hours that the CMB Market was on fire, and they immediately dispatched the first fire tender from the Accra City Station at Makola, which took four minutes to arrive at the fire scene.
He said realizing the magnitude of the fire and how it has engulfed a wider area, four additional GNFS fire tenders, two water tankers and a fire tender from the military were deplored, to help bring the fire under control.
Mr Anaglatey said they succeeded in preventing the fire from spreading to adjoining structures and eventually brought it under control.
He said looking at the portion of the market that was raised down by the fire, the cost of damage could be very huge.
The Deputy PRO said every fire scene was taken as a crime scene until proven, adding that, they could not rule out foul play but would conduct a thorough investigation to find out the cause of the fire.
He advised traders to desist from cooking in markets and turning them into living places, as well as chop bars and drinking sports at nights.
Mr Anaglatey also emphasized that illegal electrical wiring could be a source of fire outbreaks in markets.
The Deputy PRO urged city planners to ensure that markets were properly planned with fire hydrants and access routes for fire tenders to use any time there was a fire outbreak.
Madam Adwoa Agyei, a jewelry seller said she had lost all her jewelries to the fire and appealed to the government to come to their aid.
