The Ghana-Egypt Fiber Glass Company is working strenuously to introduce fiberglass canoes in the country.
Benedict Lamptey, Sales Director of Ghana Egypt Fibre Glass Company, who spoke to CITY & BUSINESS GUIDE recently in Accra after the launch of new canoes, said the technology would help address deforestation.
Government, over the years, has been working hard to tackle deforestation in the country.
Mr Lamptey mentioned that the introduction of durable canoes would reduce boat disasters since the wooden canoes are unable to withstand bad weather conditions.
He also emphasized that the new canoes would help prolong the lifespan of equipment of the fishermen in a cost effective manner.
“The company will be responsible for designing, constructing and marketing the canoes to our target market both locally and abroad.”
He therefore called for collaboration among stakeholders in the fishing industry and appealed to financial institutions to help fishermen to acquire the fiberglass canoes.
Nii Lantey Vanderpuje, Deputy Minister of Trade & Industry, expressed his appreciation to the Egyptian government for introducing the fiberglass canoes and stated that measures would be put in place to support fisher folks to acquire the canoes.
Deputy Minister for Fisheries, Aquinas Quansah, in a remark, announced the institution of a workshop to provide training to the youth.
