Dr. Afari Gyan Ignorant About PDF Files

Tuesday, 16 July 2013

In the latest twist to the ongoing election petition saga, the Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Kwadwo Afari Gyan has indicated that he is unaware of the what PDF files are in response to a direct question posed to him by the court.

The Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Afari Gyan made the revelation during cross examination when the lead counsel of the petitioners, Lawyer Philip Addison quizzed him on whether he was privy to some registration documents given to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the election process.

According to the Chairman of the E.C, though the files given to the petitioners and the second respondent were unalterable documents, he was not certain if they were PDF files.

The issue of PDFs came up after several attempts by Mr. Addison to get some clarity from Dr. Afari Gyan, about a copy of the EC’s voters’ register used for the 2012 elections.

Dr. Afari Gyan in his defence attested that that though there were minor anomalies regarding the arrangement of names on the register, the difference between the original register of the EC and the copy he was being confronted with were not much.

Mr. Addison however insisted the copy he was confronting Dr. Afari Gyan with, was a replica of the EC’s original copy and therefore wondered if the EC gave the opposition New Patriotic Party a different PDF copy from what the other parties were given.

Dr. Afari Gyan however insisted that the EC gave all the parties the same copy of the original register.

The lead counsel for the petitioners however insisted that since PDF documents could not be altered it was starnge that Dr. Afari Gyan was raising issues with the document he was being confronted with.

After several minutes of debate one of the female judges directly asked Dr Afari Gyan if he knew what PDFs were to which he answered: “No I don’t, I don’t know what a PDF file is.”

On the 44th day of the hearing of the election petition case, Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan, witness for the Electoral Commission vehemently rejected a polling station register which the petitioners attempted to tender through him.

In his opinion, it was not the authentic register used for the election.
