TWO SUSPECTED car snatchers, who embarked on a robbery operation at Afienya in the Ningo-Prampram District of the Greater Accra Region and were apprehended by police, have made their maiden appearance before the Tema Circuit court ‘A’ yesterday.
23-year old Kweku Akorsah, a resident of Madina in Accra and 21-year old Jerry Quainoo, a resident of North Kaneshie were remanded in police custody after they pleaded not guilty to the charges of conspiracy to commit crime and robbery before the court, which is presided over by Mr Eric Kyei Baffour.
The two suspects with their two accomplices, one of whom is now deceased, whose name was mentioned as Yaw Yeboah and another person, Theophilus Tetteh alias Nii Aya, a resident of Tema who is also currently at large, were said to have unlawfully entered the house of a banker and robbed him of his Toyota Camry with registration number GE 333-13 at gun point.
Yaw Yeboah, who is suspected to be the leader of the gang, was gunned down at the scene. Theophilus, however, managed to flee from the scene to avoid arrest. Akorsah and Quainoo were unfortunate as they were arrested by a police patrol team, which got hint of the car snatching.
Inspector Adu Kyeremeh, prosecuting, mentioned the complainant in the case as Theophilus Quarshie, an administrative Manager at an unnamed Accra bank and resident of Ablekuma near Afienya. According to prosecution the suspected robbers met around the Tema Motor-Way roundabout after which they set off towards Ablekuma to execute their plan on board a Mazda Demo taxi with registration number VR 4785-12.
Prosecution continued that upon arrival at Ablekuma the suspected robbers headed straight to the residence of the complainant where Yaw Yeboah and Theophilus Tetteh alighted from the taxi and went inside the house while Kweku Akorsah and Jerry Quainoo waited outside in the taxi.
The group according to prosecution succeeded in snatching the Toyota Camry from the complainant and just as they were about to flee the scene, the complainant raised an alarm which attracted the attention of some of the residents of the area as well as that of a police patrol team from the Afienya police station. They were given a hot chase and in an attempt to flee the scene, Yaw Yeboah was gunned down during exchange of fire between the suspected robbers and the patrol team.
Kweku Akorsah and Jerry Quainoo, who were in the taxi were apprehended by the police patrol team as they attempted to flee the scene. Theophilus Tetteh, according to prosecution, managed to escape without arrest and is currently being sought after by police
Later, when the taxi was thoroughly searched a seven rounds pistol ammunition, two car number plates with registration number GR 6644-12, 2 masks, a pair of hand gloves and two bags containing dresses were found.
Yaw Yeboah, who was unconscious at the time of the incident, was said to have been rushed to a medical facility but passed away even before medics could attend to him.
