Controversial member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Charles Wereko-Brobby, who was suspended recently, was nearly lynched when he stormed the national headquarters of the party to face the Disciplinary Committee.
This was a day after writing what many have described as a ‘love letter’ to 2012 vice presidential candidate of the party, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia in which he sought to apologize to the celebrated economist for some disparaging remarks he had made about him.
Dr Wereko-Brobby, otherwise known as Tarzan, was at the party’s headquarters to face members of the NPP’s Disciplinary Committee chaired by Rt Reverend Samuel Asante-Antwi over an article he wrote to condemn the party and its star witness, Dr Bawumia in the ongoing election petition hearing at the Supreme Court.
Other members of the committee are R.O. Solomon, former Ambassador to Equatorial Guinea, Gladys Asmah, former Minister of Fisheries, Dr Kwame Addo Kufuor, former Minister of Defence, Dan Botwe, former General Secretary of the party, Kenwuud Nuworsu, Volta Regional Chairman and Sherika Ahmed.
Dr Wereko-Brobby arrived at the Asylum Down NPP headquarters around 9:00am.
Moments after information went round that the onetime Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana@50 celebrations had arrived at the party’s headquarters, many supporters of the party trooped to the place to demand the head of Dr Wereko-Brobby.
Action
Realizing that their demand was not being met, some walked into the conference room where the meeting was taking place to stall the process asking that the man be made to leave the party immediately.
Not even the pleas of the chairman and members of the committee could calm the irate party supporters.
The meeting had to be suspended for a while for tempers to calm down.
Dr Wereko-Brobby was kept in the conference room hours after the meeting for fear of being lynched by the crowd.
He was said to have threatened to sue the party if any of the NPP supporters baying for his blood attacked him.
The police had to be called in to save the situation since tempers were rising to a boiling point.
Two pick-ups full of armed police men were dispatched to the place to maintain law and order.
Dr Wereko-Brobby, who covered his head with his hands, was finally whisked into a waiting pick-up, leaving behind his BMW saloon car to avoid attacks by the disenchanted party faithful who had stormed the premises.
As the vehicle owned by Kwabena Sarpong, a member of the party’s Communication team sped off, the irate supporters banged the side while others attempted to hit him amidst hooting.
One of the irate youth, Yusif Mohammed, popularly called Adarway said “this is just the beginning of the warning to everybody in the party from elders to the foot-soldiers who dare the party. We, the youth in the party, will make sure we discipline you before anybody disciplines you. We are not going to allow any big man to take us for granted.”
Humble Pie
Before his appearance at the party headquarters yesterday, the presidential candidate of the defunct United Ghana Movement (UGM) apologized to Dr Bawumia over his unwarranted attack on his person.
In his apology to Dr Bawumia, Tarzan, a former CEO of the Volta River Authority (VRA), noted, “I regret any dent to your undoubtedly high intellectual accomplishments and demonstrated capacity for excellence that the comments may have construed or implied.
“I wish to reiterate my total and unreserved apology to you and those close to you who may also have been affected by my comments,” he indicated.
He, however, declined to show remorse to the party and its leadership.
In his letter to the Disciplinary Committee, Dr Wereko-Brobby stated emphatically that “I want to reiterate my position that my purported suspension from the NPP is not in consonance with the requirements of the party’s constitution and I do not recognize nor will I accept its validity until such time that the right thing is done.”
But the firebrand former National Youth Organizer of the NPP, Anthony Abayifaa Karbo, who spoke to DAILY GUIDE, described Dr Wereko-Brobby’s apology letter to Dr Bawumia as a red-herring, claiming “it was probably an attempt truncate those processes”.
He stressed the need to allow the Disciplinary Committee of the party to fully exhaust its mandate in this matter since “an apology to Dr Bawumia cannot be equated to an apology to the entire party because in his statement, he made comments to the effect that we were fatally unable to understand and let alone appreciate what is going on in court.”
“I think that such a sweeping statement on party people is quite unfortunate and so it is important that the processes set out by the national executives must be allowed to be fully exhausted and a report submitted and a decision taken,” he noted.
