OFFICERS FROM the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Airport and Nima Police Division have received training from two Criminal Justice professors from the Centenary College, New Jersey in the United States of America aimed at enhancing the capabilities of the officers in tactical skills and crime solving techniques.
Christopher D. Linne, associate professors of Sociology and Criminal Justice, and Norman B. Cetuk, associate professors of Criminal Justice at the Centenary College took the 35 police Officers drawn from the Nima Division and the Airport District Police through a day’s training on how to be the best in their job.
During the training, the retired US police officers shared ideas and experiences of practical examples of cases they handled while in the police service in America.
On his expectations from the training, Superintendent Aduhene Bennieh, Airport Police Commander was of the hope the beneficiaries would be enlightened and become more professional after interacting with professors.
He said this was the first time officers from the CID unit were being taken through such training and that there were plans to organize more of such programmes to keep the police abreast with changing trends in their profession.
DSP Felix Anyidoho, Crime Officer at the Airport District Police, in an interview told the DAILY GUIDE said the techniques of investigating cases shared by the two professors would boost the confidence of the officers since they knew what to look out for in handling any case.
Prof Linne said as part of the curricular at the college, students were taught comparative criminal justice which had mostly been about the system of policing in Asia and Europe, “We have never done anything on Africa and Ghana is a good example that is why we are here.”
“In the police academy, we are not taught how to treat victims but how to blow the whistle and all about the pistol”, he said after sharing how to treat people better.
Among others, the two professionals whose visits was facilitated by Dr Ebenezer Obiri Addo, a Ghanaian professor of African Studies and Religion at the Drew University at New Jersey, would travel to Obuasi where they would interact with the police and visit a school which they have been supporting for some time now.
At the end of the training, a certificate of recognition was awarded to the Airport Police Commander, Superintendent Aduhene Benieh, for his leadership and commitment to professionalism, development and achievement of international awards earned for the Ghana Police Service.
Professor Norman Cetuk, associate professors of criminal Justice Norman commended the police officers participating in the training programme for their smart appearance.
It is expected that Professor Cetuk work collaborate with Superintendent Aduhene Benieh to write on community policing.
