Cabinet has approved the Right To Information Bill and submitted it for parliamentary approval. President John Mahama has always said he will give his assent to the Bill soon as parliament approves it.
Briefing the Press on Friday at the Flagstaff house, the Minister of information and Media Relations, Mahama Ayariga stated that the decision to approve the Information Bill is to improve transparency and governance.
The Freedom of Information Bill when passed will give Ghanaians the right to ask any public sector organization for all the recorded information they have on any subject.
Civil Society and members of the media have been complaining about the delay in the passage of the Right to Information Bill which was initiated in 2010.
There have been calls from various groups for government to pass the bill into law to allow easy access to information.
Mahama Ayariga said “yesterday the cabinet met and one of the issues that was considered was the passage of the Right to Information Bill. Cabinet went through it and has given approval so that the bill will be sent to parliament for parliament to consider and pass the bill.”
According to him, “the president places a premium on the expeditious passage of the right to information bill. He will give his assent to it immediately the bill is passed by parliament. We urge parliament to give priority to this piece of legislation.”
