The Chinese suspects
The Eastern Regional Police Command arrested 14 illegal Chinese miners at Akyem Adasewase in the Atiwa District on Wednesday.
They are workers of Mazoro Mining Company Limited.
The Police also arrested a Ghanaian director of the company, Mohammed Abdulai aka Baba Alhaji, aged 34.
The suspects are Wang Nao, 30, Li Den Heng, 24, Cheng Nuojun, 33, Ni Menmen, 27, Deng Ying, 50, Yang Weng, 27, Wang Yeu Zhang, 40.
The rest are Shun Qin Sheng, 58, Ma Li Hua, 46, Zhou Guang Tai, 46, Wang Li Chun, 45, Wangi Zheng, 44, Zhang Jun Wa, 30 and Wang Jin Qiang, 40.
The police also impounded four excavators, a bulldozer and payload, as well as a refinery machine.
Head of the Regional Public Affairs Unit of the Police, ASP Yaw Nketia-Yeboah, who spoke on behalf of the Regional Commander, DCOP Akuribah Yaagy, said the Commander was grateful to the people of Akyem Adasewase for not attacking the illegal miners but reporting their activities to the police for appropriate action to be taken, and called on other communities to do same.
He noted that the operation, which was led by Superintendent Jeffery Darko, Commander of the Anyinam District Police, was successful and calm, as none of the suspects attempted to escape.
ASP Nketia-Yeboah noted that the activities of the suspects had adversely affected the environment.
The 14 Chinese, alongside their Ghanaian counterpart, have since been arraigned before a Koforidua Court.
The Chinese were remanded into police custody to re-appear on Monday, June 10, 2013.
However, Mohammed Abdulai was granted bail with three sureties.
The police said they had been very cooperative.
