Kwadwo Asamoah aka Gawusu
A STAUNCH New Patriotic Party (NPP) supporter in Kumasi, Kwadwo Asamoah aka ‘Gawusu’, was shot and later butchered to death by some unknown persons who wielded guns and machetes on Wednesday afternoon at Ash Town in the Manhyia South Constituency.
Another person, Victor Ocrah, who was standing close to the crime scene, was hit by a stray bullet fired by the attackers of Gawusu, killing him as well.
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh aka ‘Napo’ is the MP for Manhyia South and the victim is said to be one of his boys, prompting people to read political meanings into the daylight attack.
Kumasi, in recent times, has become the playground of gangsters, with the police finding it difficult to control the situation.
Gawusu, who was stoutly-built, was attacked violently by about 12 unknown persons when he was relaxing with his friend, one Aliki, at a drinking spot at Down Town in Ash Town around 2:30pm.
Gawusu and Ocrah were confirmed dead on arrival at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi around 3:00pm where they had been rushed to for medical treatment.
Reports said Gawusu died on the way to the hospital, whilst Ocrah died when he was rushed to the Emergency Unit at KATH.
Their bodies had since been deposited at the morgue for autopsy, Mallam Yahaya of Kessben FM said.
What prompted the violent attack was not immediately known, as close sources gave various reasons.
Some alleged that the attackers had a long-standing feud with Gawusu, so they decided to teach him a bitter lesson, while others claimed the attack was politically motivated.
The gangsters, upon reaching the crime scene, held Gawusu captive after which some of them shot him down.
The hoodlums, whose identities were not immediately known, did not show mercy, as they slashed the collapsed Gawusu with machetes, opening deep wounds all over his body.
As the group fired shots indiscriminately, a stray bullet hit Ocrah, who was standing a few meters away, resulting in his death.
The gangsters had stormed the crime scene with motorbikes and a taxi, and left the same way they came, fleeing at top speed.
Ironically, Aliki, who was sitting with Gawusu at the drinking spot at the time of the attack, was spared by the bloodthirsty hoodlums, most of whom reportedly wielded pump action guns.
The attack was so swift and precise, giving an indication that it was well-planned.
Eye witnesses said the attack was so vicious that nobody could venture onto the crime scene at the time.
Good Samaritans at the area could only rush to the almost dead Gawusu and Ocrah after the hoodlums had left the scene.
The two victims were bundled into a taxi and rushed to KATH for medication.
DAILY GUIDE gathered that a sizeable number of police personnel were deployed to the area minutes after the incident to prevent any reprisal attack on some known NDC ‘machomen’ in the area.
Those who were reading political meaning into the issue claimed that the persons that carried out the dangerous attack were known NDC men who reside at Mbrom in Ash Town.
DAILY GUIDE gathered that some angry NPP supporters had decided to hit back in a brutal fashion against those NDC loyalists at Mbrom.
Some residents of Ash Town said they were living in fear as the area was gradually becoming unsafe to live.
They appealed to the police to intensify their patrols.
DAILY GUIDE tried to reach Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh aka ‘Napo’, MP for Manhyia South about the security situation in his constituency, but the MP’s aides said Napo had travelled outside the country.
