Three suspected armed robbers were killed in a gun battle with a police patrol team from the Accra Regional Police Command at Ashaley Botwe, a suburb of Accra, late Wednesday evening.
The robbers, armed with deadly weapons, were said to have snatched a Nissan Micra taxi from the owner at Kwabenya and were escaping with it when the police patrol team chanced upon them.
The police chased them to Ashaley Botwe where the security agencies snuffed the life out of them after a gun battle.
One of the criminals who sustained gunshot wounds managed to escape, according to the police, who were hunting for him.
The three, who died shortly after their deadly encounter with the police, had three locally manufactured pistols, one foreign revolver pistol, 20 live cartridges and a sharp knife on them.
Two used cartridges were also found at the scene of the shooting.
Deputy Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Christian Tetteh Yohuno, who briefed the media, said around 9:00pm on Wednesday, February 27, 2013, a police team assigned to patrol the Kwabenya-Pokuase road came across a taxi driver screaming that his taxi cab had been snatched by a gang of four men.
The driver said the suspects picked him from Agyen Kotoku near Amasaman to Dome.
On reaching a point, around the Kwabenya road, the four, aged between 22 and 26 years, pulled a gun on the driver, snatched the taxi with registration number GR 5251-13 and sped off.
The armed robbers were given a hot chase and on realizing that they were being pursued, they started firing at the police.
Police returned fire, and in the course of the exchanges, the robbers’ vehicle ran into a ditch.
One of the suspects, who sustained some injuries, managed to escape with his wounds but the three, who were badly wounded, were arrested.
On the way to the regional police headquarters, however, the three died.
When a search was conducted on them, the police found the weapons.
The vehicle has been towed to the regional police headquarters, with the taxi driver assisting in police investigations.
DCOP Yohuno urged individuals and health facilities that might come into contact with any individual with gunshot wounds to report the matter to the nearest police station.
The wounded robber is believed to be hiding around Ashaley-Botwe, Madina, Adentan or in a nearby area.
The bodies of the three have been deposited at the Police Hospital morgue for preservation.
