Bui Dam Worker Down Tools

Monday, 4 February 2013

Field workers at Ghana's second largest hydroelectric project, the Bui Dam, are embarking on a demonstration in protest of what they say are a poor wage structure and redundancy package.
An observer who pleaded anonymity told Joy FM that, the workers stopped working Sunday to begin their public protest.

“There is no production going on”, he said, “they are playing music, dancing and holding placards.”

The observer added that site managers are on their way to talk to the workers.

The Bui Dam project is designed to generate 400 megawatts of power to augment the country's debilitating energy shortfall.

The citizens are currently enduring power rationing, locally known as 'load shedding'.

In order to cope with these outages, industrial and domestic consumers have to make alternative arrangements for power by procuring fuel-burning generators to meet their electricity needs.
