Ghana’s technical team has given the assurance that they are giving complacency no place in their vocabulary, as they battle Niger today. Kick-off time is 8:00pm local time (6:00pm Ghana time).
To the technical team, the only way to realize their dream of finishing the group as leaders is to eschew complacency in this evening’s game.
They believe complacency has dealt badly with many teams and individuals in competitions, citing DR Congo as a classical example in their game against Niger last Thursday.
At a press conference at the team’s 14-storey hotel, Garden Court, last Friday, deputy coach Maxwell Konadu said, “Complacency is one thing that affects a team if you don’t carefully deal with it.
“It can get into your system and somewhere along the line, cause problems for you. And I think that is what affected [DR] Congo [who drew goalless with Niger].
“Our psychologist is doing his best to help us get rid of that. If we are able to deal with that, I think the boys will be on top of their game and go on to win for us.”
The Black Stars played a 2-2 draw in their first game in Port Elizabeth against DR Congo, but have since bounced back after beating Mali 1-0 on Thursday to jump top of the group.
Despite the sudden upturn in form and result, Konadu still insists that the team is nowhere near their best.
“I don’t think we’ve played our best game yet. We think the boys can still improve.
“There’s more room for improvement.
What you’re seeing is good but it’s not the best from us. We just hope that we will get the best out of the boys in due course,” he added.
There is every indication from the team’s training grounds that coach Appiah will maintain the squad that triumphed over Mali apart from Wakaso Mubarak, who is serving a match ban following a two yellow-card build up.
Christian Atsu is the probable candidate to replace the Espanyol debutant.
