Claude Maerten, EU head in Ghana
Government has received 16 million Euros from the European Union (EU) under the Ghana Multi-Donor Budget Support framework.
This comprises a 10 million Euros budget support for the Ministry of Health, and a 5.65 million Euros general budget support within the framework of the EU’s existing financial agreement with Ghana.
The GH¢25,000,000 equivalent support offered to the Ministry of Health will support the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG’s) Accelerated Framework and Country Action Plan developed to combat maternal mortality.
A press release from the EU delegation in Accra issued lately said the framework constituted the first tranche of a programme worth 52 million Euros or GH¢130,000,000.
The support to the Health Ministry will further engender improvement in skilled birth attendance, emergency obstetrics and new-born care including family planning programmes.
The additional funding aims to slash the undesirable instance of maternal deaths to 185 deaths per 100,000 live births by 2015.
It comes in addition to some 400 million Euros, which the EU was providing to Ghana over 2007 to 2013.
The EU mobilized the support as additional funding for countries that were “most off-track in achieving some of the MDG’s.”
“The EU is pleased to have effected another disbursement of 5.65 million Euro equivalents to GH¢14,000,000 to complement Government’s own domestically generated revenues and to facilitate the implementation of the national budget and its associated public expenditure plans to sustainably reduce poverty.”
In July 2012, the EU released 24 million Euros from the MGD-contract to the Ghana Government Treasury account in accordance with its MDBS practice
