Barely a day after she publicly announced that she will reject any overtures of the John Mahama-led National Democratic Congress (NDC) to give her a ministerial appointment, Chairperson of the Convention People’s Party (CPP), Samia Yaaba Nkrumah, the only daughter of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, is in the news again.
This time around, Samia, who doubles as leader of the party, is said to have initiated what they said to be “the biggest shake-up in the party’s 63-year history.”
A news statement issued in Accra and signed by CPP’s Director of Communication Nii Armah Akomfrah, said “the CPP leader has tabled a 5-Point Plan for discussion with the party’s Leadership.”
“This will be followed by consultation with the membership of the party beginning with the Central Committee of the party followed by the National Executive Council,” the statement added.
The release said the plan included “a total restructuring of the party, re-branding of the party, strengthening party education, renewed activism, internal financial re-organization, Nkrumahist unity, and greater international re-connection.’
According to the release, the party chair believed “the CPP went into the 2012 elections knowing that these elections would serve as part of its renewal process.”
She was quoted to have said in the release that, “Many of our candidates who run are in their twenties and thirties and they now form the new vanguard of the party.”
“The CPP Chairperson above everything else believes that the youth should take centre stage in all affairs of the party. The party machinery for her own campaign in Jomoro was heavily youth-driven and this is the model that the CPP Chair wants to repeat nationwide,” the release said.
According to the release, the party chair reassured the rank and file of the party that the CPP will overcome.
