The December 7 general elections have registered substantial casualties in the Ghanaian Parliament, as several big shots lose their seats.
As at press time, and based on available results from the constituencies computed nationwide, approximately 11 big names in Parliament have ‘surrendered’ their seats to their opponents after fierce contests.
Unlike the Presidential results, Parliamentary results are declared at the constituencies; hence, all the confirmed parliamentary wins are binding.
When the next Ghanaian Parliament resumes, it would miss prominent names such as Minister of Employment and Social Welfare, Moses Asaga; Michael Teye Nyaunu ; former Information Minister, John Tia Akologu; Minister of Lands & Natural Resources, Mike Allen Hammah; Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, J.S. Annan; board member of the Energy Commission, Francis Bawaana Dakura; and Kempes Ofosu-Ware, Tema Metropolitan Chief Executive,  all of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) as they lost their seats. Kempes was contesting for the second time.
Also on the side of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), famous names such as the Deputy Minority Leader, Ambrose Dery; former Minister of Ports, Harbours and Railways, Prof. Ameyaw Ekumfi; former Energy Minister, Kofi Adda; Catherine Afeku of the Evalue Gwira constituency; and  Samuel Obodai of the Agona West Constituency, had their seats snatched from them.
The Convention People’s Party (CPP) lost its only parliamentary seat, which was being held by Samia Nkrumah, the Member of Parliament for the Jomoro Constitueny in the Western Region and daughter of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah.
The Casualty List
Moses Asaga, the MP of Nabdam Constituency in the Upper East Region failed to retain his seat when he lost it to the NPP’s Boniface Agambilla who swept over 7,000 of the approximately 13,600 votes, leaving Mr. Asaga trailing with 6,545.
Reclusive member of the NDC, Michael Teye-Nyaunu, MP for the Manya Krobo Constituency who decided to go independent after a bitter face-off with his party, lost his seat to the Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, Ebenezer Okletey Terlarbi of the NDC.
Samia Nkrumah, daughter of Ghana’s first President, lost the Jomoro seat, leaving the Convention People’s Party with no seat when the next Parliament assembles.
Samia lost her seat to the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Francis Anaman who polled 21,651 while she got 18,110.
Also, the NDC MP for Jirapa, Francis Bawaana Dakura, suffered a defeat at the hands of Independent Candidate, Paul Derigubaa.
Incumbent MP for Agona West, Samuel Obodai lost his seat to the NDC’s Lawyer Charles Obeng-Inkoom who polled 30, 166 and the former polled 25,397.
Catherine Afeku of the Evalue Gwira constituency lost to Kweku Tamekyi Kissi of the NDC who polled 14,096 votes to win the seat. Mrs. Afeku had 11,651 votes.
Former Minister of Information, John Tia Akologu lost the Talensi seat to Robert Nachinab Doameng Mosore, the NPP candidate.
Deputy Minority leader, Ambrose Dery lost to Attorney General Benjamin Kunbour in the Nandom constituency.
This means Benjamin Kunbour has won the seat he previously lost to the Minority Leader four years ago.
He polled 13,735 against Ambrose Dery’s 6,538 votes.
Minister for Lands & Natural Resources, Mike Hammah also lost his second term bid to represent the people of the Efutu Constituency. He lost to NPP’s Alexander Afenyo-Markin by 2,085.
Mr. Afenyo-Markin chalked 19, 062 while Mike Hammah polled 16,977.
In the same Central Region, the incumbent and Deputy Minister for Trade and Industry, Dr. J.S. Annan lost the seat to the NPP’s Dr. Nana Ato Dadzie in the Komenda Edina Eguafo-Abbriem (KEEA) Constituency in a contest of the Doctors.
