The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has accused the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of planting the Presidential candidate for the People’s National Convention (PNC), Hassan Ayariga to distract its candidate [Nana Akufo-Addo] at the IEA’s Presidential debate on Wednesday.

Mr Ayariga’s participation in the debate was characterized by incessant coughing, a situation which some have described as an orchestrated plot to distract the NPP candidate’s presentation.

The General Secretary of the NPP, Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie in an interview with Citi News, said, “It was strange isn’t it, that the man who claimed that he was not well and that he was coughing, only coughed when Nana Akufo-Addo spoke but when he himself was speaking, not a single cough was heard. And then again any time John Mahama spoke, he was usually very quiet and was not coughing…. but as soon as Nana Addo was about to start or starts, then it comes.”

Mr. Afriyie added that the plans of Mr. Ayariga failed as he was unable to distract Nana Addo.

“If it was deliberate, as it were, to distract Nana Akufo-Addo from putting his thoughts together, it did not help him. The way and manner that he had been procured to come and attack and attack Nana Akufo-Addo’s policies and whatever we stood for and even where the debate did not veer into such areas, he had to ask his own questions, answer them and mark his own script.”

Meanwhile, the Progressive People’s Party (NPP) has expressed disappointment with the outcome of the debate noting that the some of the policies the candidates proposed were not realistic.

The Communication Director of the PPP, Richmond Keelson maintained Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom’s policy on the declaration of assets was the first step in the fight against corruption.

He said: “Yesterday was a jamboree of theatrics and we the PPP, we think it was not a debate at all because if you saw Obama and Mitt Romney, were they reading? They were serious. If you say you want to be President of this country, there should be an open declaration from you that by my actions, indeed I will be very much considered as a person who has the wherewithal, to really deal with the canker called corruption.”
