TWO MEN from Techiman in the Brong Ahafo region are currently in the grips of police for allegedly possessing dry leaves suspected to be Indian Hemp.
Clifford Kyere and Kwame Boakye were arrested by personnel of the Brong Ahafo Regional Motor Traffic and Transport Unit (MTTU) Command of the Police Service at Tanoso, near Techiman last Sunday when they claimed ownership of 23 parcels of Indian Hemp compressed in black polythene bags.
The suspects attempted to bribe the two officers, Inspector Emmanuel Kofi Nyame and General Lance Corporal Nicholas Konadu who arrested them including their boss Assistant Superintendent of Police, Teddy Damptey-Brown with GH¢20,000 but the officers rejected it.
ASP Teddy Damptey-Brown, Deputy Brong Ahafo MTTU Commander, who confirmed the arrest to DAILY GUIDE, said the MTTU personnel were on their routine motor check on the Techiman-Kumasi road when they signaled the occupants of the vehicle to stop which they refused.
He said the police became suspicious and decided to pursue them and in the process overtook them. He said the occupants of the vehicle, the driver and a passenger however fled leaving the vehicle behind.
ASP Damptey-Brown stated that when the vehicle was brought to the station along with the substance, the two suspects popped up claiming ownership of both the vehicle and the suspected Indian Hemp which led to their arrest.
He explained to DAILY GUIDE that both men will be processed for court whilst the police continued their investigations to find out all those connected to the case.
Meanwhile, Brong Ahafo Regional Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Police Service, ASP Christopher Tawiah, has called on the public to trust the police because they were working in their interest.
He debunked widely held public perception that personnel of the MTTU were simply on the road extorting money from drivers.
According to him, the arrest of the suspects and the rejection of the GH¢20,000 bribe was ample evidence that the police were on the road to work for the public good.
