FAITH MOBOLAJI, a 21-year-old Nigerian woman, has been arrested alongside Charlotte Kafui Tsobi, 41, from Kpando in the Volta Region and some 18 others for human trafficking and prostitution.
The 20 persons were rounded up on Saturday, November 24, 2012 at about 4am at an unmarked brothel at Nima in Accra, while some four men were still enjoying their bouts of sex.
The women claimed they were prostitutes because the men with whom they had children shirked their responsibilities. They said they charged GH¢5 per bout.
According to the Director of Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU) at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Superintendent Patricia Quaye, Faith had been on their wanted list for almost a year now.
The AHTU got a tip-off of the activities of prostitutes and traffickers in and around the Nima-Maamobi area.
After the police had gathered some intelligence of their operations, they organized a swoop at the location and arrested 16 prostitutes, two traffickers and some four men who had then solicited the services of some of the prostitutes.
The four men, whose ages ranged between 21 and 33 years, and six Ghanaian women aged between 21 and 48 would be charged and arraigned. Nine victims from Nigerian would be handed over to the Nigeria High Commission, after the needed formalities, to be reunited with their families.
However, Faith Mobolaji and Charlotte Tsobi, who operated the Nima brothel, would face charges on human trafficking for the various roles they played in trafficking and luring victims into prostitution.
The Director of AHTU said the suspects usually trafficked young women from all parts of the country and Nigeria under the guise of offering them jobs with mouth-watering pay cheques at supposed big restaurants and hair-dressing saloons in Accra.
Even though the expectations of these young ladies were mostly dashed, they were unable to complain because they might have been subjected to some horrific blood covenants or rituals intended to cow them to stay mute over their ordeal.
Supt. Quaye revealed a new trend of trafficking, saying last week, two Nigerians and a Ghanaian deaf and dumb girls were rescued in Suhum in the Eastern Region.
The Ghanaian has been reunited to her family while the Nigerians have been taken back to their country.
She explained that a Nigerian trafficker was reported to have trafficked young deaf and dumb girls from Nigeria into the country for exploitative agenda.
The girls are made to distribute marked envelopes during the day for alms while they warm the beds of clients in hotels at night.
The Anti-Human Trafficking Unit of the CID is making efforts to arrest the said trafficker whom they suspected had gone into hiding.
She cautioned the public to be wary of such persons who begged for alms since they might be part of the deaf and dumb syndicate.
