Flour User's Meeting in Ghana

The Ashanti Regional Branch of the Ghana National Flour Users Association (GNFUA) has expressed grave concern about the sharp increases in prices of flour on the market in recent times, calling on government to help save their businesses.

The President of the association, Comfort Akotua, noted that their businesses were collapsing at a fast rate lately because prices of flour on the market continue to escalate on a daily basis.

She spoke exclusively to TG shortly after the official launch of activities to mark the 10th anniversary of association in Kumasi.

Madam Akotua disclosed that a bag of flour was going for GH¢100, about three times the price of flour some few months ago.

She noted that prices of sugar, margarine and all items used to bake bread and other foods had been increased, a development which was negatively affecting the bakery industry.

Madam Akotua said several energetic Ghanaian youth had been employed in the bakery industry and consequently appealed passionately to government to implement policies and programmes that would halt the escalation of prices of products on the market.

To curb the increase in prices of various goods, Madam Akotua implored government to supply flour at affordable prices to the stakeholders.

Formed 10 years ago, GNFUA now has membership of over 600 most of whom bake bread and also provide jobs for the youth of the country.

Nana Kyei Baffuor, Asemhene, the special guest at the event, urged bread bakers to transmit their deep knowledge in the profession to the budding youth to help sustain the profession.

He expressed delight about the steady growth of the association over the years and tasked the members to remain united and work hard to develop the association in the coming years.
