Health Minister, Alban Bagbin
Striking Consultants at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi have attributed their refusal to return to work to an alleged comment made by the Health Minister, Alban Bagbin who is said to have described their allowances as blood money; a comment they described as unfortunate.
According to them, the Health Ministry has breached the agreement signed between the two bodies regarding the conditions of the service they are rendering to the hospital.
The Consultants withdrew their services to the hospital on Tuesday over nine months unpaid allowances owed them by the Health Ministry.
They have said that they will only return to work if their allowances are paid in full.
Speaking to Citi News, the spokesperson for Academic Consultants, Dr. Frank Ankobiah said the group will stick with its decision till the matter is addressed fully.
He said: “The comments were very unfortunate, very, very unfortunate but what we are asking for is that we would only come back when we have been paid in full. We had an agreement with them to pay us a percentage of that of our counterparts in the Ministry of Health are receiving for the work that we do. But they have actually reneged on the agreement and they owe us up to eight months.”
“But now you say you have put three months of the allowances in our account and that money is even the old rate. For the past four years we have been paid the same amount and so we are asking them to pay us up to date all what they owe us”, said Dr. Ankobiah.
