Unilever Gets New Plant in Ghana

Wednesday, 11 July 2012

Unilever Ghana Limited, as part of plans to reduce operational cost, has commissioned a $7 million plant which would enable it utilize gas to fuel its factory instead of the residual fuel oil and hydro-electronic power (RFO) it currently uses.

The combined heat and power plant, made possible through the partnership with GENSER Power Africa, would also provide a reliable and stable power for its operations, make operations ‘cleaner’ as heat will not be released into the atmosphere to cause pollution.

David Mureithi, Managing Director of Unilever Ghana, disclosed this during a summit on sustainability recently at Tema.

According to him, the major investment was in fulfillment of Unilever’s commitment to grow sustainably.

Mr. Mureithi added that in spite of the benefits, the plant would reduce cost.

He therefore called on government to expedite work at the oil fields to make natural gas available for industrial use in view of the multiple benefits it holds for industry, consumers and socio-economic growth.

Sherry Ayittey, Minister of Environment, Science & Technology, commenting on the plant, said its benefits would greatly contribute to government’s climate change adaptation and mitigation measures.

A representative from GENSER Power Plant, Nana Osae Gyepong, commended Unilever for its collaborative efforts with GENSER.

Daniel Marfo, Director of Corporate Affairs at Fidelity Bank, Financier of the project, said that bank would continue to promote financial and strategic growth.

He noted that availability of power was very important, stressing that his outfit would always support efforts aimed at providing renewable energy
